Antonio Pugliese, just off the British ship, off the coast of Montevideo together with his friend, jumped on an Austrian ship which took them to Buenos Aires. At the time his only possession was a pair of shoes tied to his neck so they wouldn’t get wet, and three pounds.

Nicolasa Alegre Velazco de Pugliese was born in Argentina (probably in Buenos Aires) in 1853, the year after the battle of Caseros. She was the daughter of Pedro Alegre and Monica Velazco. She had at least 2 brothers; Eduardo and Enrique.
